What is the qualification?
Vocational qualification worth 1 GCSE, graded pass, merit, distinction and distinction*
What will students be doing on the course? How will it be structured?
This is a qualification that is made up of components that are assessed in a variety of ways. For the award, students will be completing three components. Two components are coursework based and students will be given assignments with a series of tasks to complete. Students’ work is then either marked as pass, merit, distinction. There is one externally examined component, Health and Wellbeing, which will be graded pass, merit or distinction depending on achievement.
Examined Component:
Health and Wellbeing: you will sit a two hour written paper where you will analyse a case study and create a health plan to improve the persons health and well being, justifying your decisions.
Coursework topic areas include:
Human Life Span Development: Two assignments. One where you focus on the growth and development of a chosen individual across three life stages and the different factors that influence their development. The other where you compare two people who have experienced the same life event and how well they were supported.
Health and Social Care Services: Two assignments. One where you study a case study about two members of the same family and assess how well local services meet their needs. The other is where you role play how you would demonstrate the 7 care values which includes confidentiality, respect and choice.

Year 10
Autumn and Spring Terms: Continuous Coursework Component 1
Summer Term: Continuous Coursework Component 1 and 2
Year 11
Autumn Term: Prepare for examination, Component 3
Spring Term: Continuous coursework, Component 2 and external examination Component 3.
Summer Term: Continuous coursework plus the option of resitting the externally examined component, Components 2 and 3.
What skills do students need to develop to be successful at this course?
To be successful, students will need to be very organised because all of the coursework components will have strict deadlines. Students also need to be able to work independently as well as part of a group. In addition students will need to be able to write coherently about a variety of case studies.
What could this qualification be used for?
If students achieve a Level 2 pass or better it is then possible to progress on to Level 3 qualifications such as the new T Level in Education and Childcare or the Cambridge Technical in Health and Social Care. It could help should students wish to enter the apprenticeships and traineeship routes in Child Care, Social Care work or work in the health sector. Students will also be able to use the transferable skills such as self-reflection, communication, teamwork and problem solving in other areas of study.
