What is the qualification?
GCSE Science Trilogy is worth two GCSEs, graded from 1-1 to 9-9.
What will students be doing on the course? How will it be structured?
There are 24 units of work divided between biology, chemistry, and physics.
Students will need to carry out 21 required practicals. These will take place in lessons and are not assessed, however there will be questions about some of the required practicals in final examinations.
Assessment
The course is assessed by 100% terminal examination at the end of Year 11 by sitting six, 1 hour and 15 minute exams. Students will sit two examinations in each science (biology, chemistry, and physics).
What skills do students need to develop to be successful at this course?
To be successful in science students need to be able to apply their knowledge to new situations. Students need to have the ability to draw conclusions from data, and use the information to explain scientific theory. Students should be confident in using a range of practical and mathematical techniques.
What could this qualification be used for?
A GCSE in science can open many doors. Students may choose to continue to study for A levels in science, or opt for the BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science. Many universities and employers are keen for students to have good science grades as it shows they are an analytical and logical thinker.
